Michael Chrisman and Tim Yancey first began their relationship via phone
calls and written correspondence about the techniques of bookbinding and
book restoration. In keeping with the tradition of their beloved craft,
the relationship gradually evolved into a modern-day example of master
and apprentice. Along the way the two became close friends, and they officially
sealed their commitment to the world of bookbinding by founding Bookbinders
Workshop in 2006.
Michael
LeRoy Chrisman, has studied bookbinding, restoration and
conservation for over 30 years. From the age of 16 he began his own study
and later gleaned expertise from many of the world's finest and most distinguished
professionals, including many years of guidance and mentoring from Bernard
C. Middleton, M.B.E., F.S.A. of London, England. Mr. Chrisman's accolades
are many. He has given lectures and demonstrations on rare book restoration,
period-style binding, and rare book conservation at numerous venues. These
include Kent State University, Guild of Bookworkers - Potomac Chapter
at the Folger-Shakespeare Library, Guild of Bookworkers - Midwest Chapter
and the Preservation Department of the Marriott Library at the University
of Utah.
In 1999, Mr. Chrisman accepted an invitation from the Chief of Conservation
at The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. to serve as a specially-
appointed Rare Book Conservator for The Thomas Jefferson Conservation
Project. There he personally participated in the restoration and conservation
of many works from the personal library of this famed patriot and President.
During the course of his tenure, Mr. Chrisman received a Special Achievement
Award from the Librarian of Congress, Dr. James H. Billington. Today,
Michael L. Chrisman is the sole owner and President of Bookbinders Workshop,
Inc., Long Island, New York.
W. Timothy Yancey began his bookbinding
pursuit later in life as a hobbyist but quickly sought quality instruction
at the American Academy of Bookbinding and later as a private student
under Chrisman's watchful eye. Although Yancey's experience has spanned
fewer years, he shares the same passion for excellence as his teacher.
Founder of Legacy Bookbinding and Restoration, LLC, Mr. Yancey's
contributions are not limited only to his bookbinding and restoration
skills; his knowledge of business and finance has played a significant
role in the success of The Lost Gutenburgs.
Finally, it is our unwavering
belief that God's Word is eternal. And though the work of
our hands will surely pass away, it is our desire that He will look with
pleasure upon the
craftsmanship of His servants and that this work will endure for centuries
to come.
Therefore, it is to the Glory of God that we dedicate this immense
undertaking.
